Bachelor of Arts Program
Bachelor's Degree in Liberal and Islamic Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal and Islamic Studies program at Zaytuna College offers a true intellectual foundation. Undergraduates acquire the tools of learning, known as the trivium in the Latin West, the fundamental reasoning skills upon which all learning is built. These subjects–grammar, rhetoric, and logic–are taught through time-tested sources from the Muslim and Euro-American traditions. This foundation enables a student to grapple with new knowledge and ideas, an invaluable skill even outside of academics. Zaytuna undergraduates also pursue a rigorous training in both Qur’anic and spoken Arabic, which opens the door for students to access the Muslim intellectual tradition directly. The BA builds a learner who can bridge two great classical traditions.
Two Traditions
Our liberal arts curriculum contains the timeless texts of the Islamic tradition, as well as the great works and ideas of Euro-American civilization.
A Distinct Approach
Learn about Zaytuna’s distinct approach to teaching the Islamic sciences in a liberal arts context. We aim to help you train your mind and acquire the requisite tools that will lead to a life of learning, thought, and reflection, and we aim to cultivate your character so that you always do so with humility, purpose, and piety.
A Community of Learning
Zaytuna College aims to foster a holistic environment of learning where inquiry, transmission, and debate take place as a way of life inside and outside the classroom.
The Trivium
The trivium is the foundation of the College’s pedagogical mission. Its constituent disciplines—grammar, logic, and rhetoric, each of which is taught in both the Islamic and Euro-American traditions—are studied and repeatedly practiced by students throughout their four years of study, to achieve excellence in reading, writing, speaking, and reasoning.
