The characteristics they possess are from the traces of the Prophet ﷺ, the Messenger of Mercy, sent by Allah ﷻ as a "mercy to mankind." What are the key Prophetic virtues that make a Muslim distinct? How can we inculcate those virtues and overcome the obstacles that stand in our way of attaining them? This session will discuss the characteristics of a believer and the virtues they reflect, along with how we may strive to attain them in our daily lives in order to best reflect the Prophetic light and legacy. It refers particularly to the synthesis of the Islamic sciences of kalām (theology) and tasawwuf (spirituality) that took place in the classical period and served as a hallmark of Sunni thought and tradition. To prepare an optional reading for the class, attendees can review an English translation of Imām al-Ghazālī's “Deliverance from Error” Since this class will be held in the ACA masjid, babysitting is available for children 10 and younger ($15 per child). What role does taqwa play in the day to day elements of our life which appear to be furthest from anything sacred? What does it mean to be God conscious in today’s world outside of our religious spaces? How can a deepened relationship to God allow us to navigate our approach to relationships, work, parenting, and other facets of our life? These are questions that will be explored in this session. 2018-03-17 18:00:00 2018-03-17 20:00:00 America/Los_Angeles With God on Our Side? Islam and the Question of Pluralism In an age characterized by an overall assault on religious practices and Abrahamic morality, Muslims would do well to have greater tolerance for, and to even cooperate with, those who are close to us in our beliefs and values. This also poses challenging questions: What choices of individual conscience should Muslim theology accommodate? How was kufr understood in the Islamic tradition? Does radical pluralism become a type of relativism? Join us for a lively and informative conversation between three scholars—Hamza Yusuf, Maria Dakake, and Andrew March—working in the frontiers of this emerging discussion.
