Study Abroad

Zaytuna College’s study abroad program has the potential to be life altering if you choose to embark on this adventure. Plunge yourself into understanding the unique history of  Islam in Spain, while immersing yourself in the rich culture of Cordoba and Alhambra.

The study abroad program seeks to locate Islam in history through selected examination of texts and sites that have played a major role in forming memory and shaping contexts.

Students will be introduced to historical chronology of Islam in the Iberian Peninsula, major scholars, their contributions through various genres, periods and the perennial texts that emerged from that era.  In addition, students will have a guided tour of Alhambra while given preparation to read the poetry inscribed on the walls, examine the epistemic that informed the architecture and design of the palace itself and how the site is interpreted in the contemporary period. Students will also have a guided tour of the Albacin, the surviving Muslim quarter in Granada, a visit to Cordoba old Mosque, Muslim homes from the era, the restored Jewish quarter and the home of Maimonides (Moses ben Maimon).

Through this course, students are guided to understand and examine the texts within the contexts that more often than not shaped and influenced the outcome.
