In an historic first for the United States, an American Muslim college has now joined the nation’s community of accredited institutions of higher education.

In 2015 the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) granted Zaytuna College accreditation. WASC is recognised by the U.S. Department of Education and accredits institutions in several Western states, including Zaytuna’s neighbours such as Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley.

Zaytuna College earned accreditation in an unusually short period of time for colleges. In Fall 2010, the College notified WASC of its intent to become accredited. In December 2013, the College sought eligibility to apply for accreditation, which was approved by WASC in February 2014, and accreditation was granted on March 4, 2015.

In 2018, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredited Zaytuna College's ambitious new M.A. program in Islamic Texts. The achievement represents a major milestone, not only for Zaytuna's growth as a Muslim liberal arts college, but also, God willing, for a renewed meeting of Islamic and Western streams of scholarship, which have a long history of enriching one another.

Following the initial five-year period of accreditation, in early 2020, WASC reaffirmed its accreditation of Zaytuna for a period of eight years to February 2028.
