02/08/18

The Zaytuna College Bookstore is preparing to host multiple Book Club events throughout the 2018 Spring semester. Join Imam Zaid Shakir and Imam Dawood Yasin on the last Friday of each month through June to discuss a selection of important texts carefully curated from our Bookstore. In the spirit of Black History Month, our first Book Club will be held on Friday, February 23rd, with a discussion of The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. In his book, Haley chronicles the rise of Malcolm X, from his years as a street hustler, dope peddler, and thief, to his transformation into one of the most influential African-American leaders in the American Civil Rights movement and prominent Muslim figures in American Islam.

In March, The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers will be discussed – the tale of a young second-generation Yemeni-American man’s dream of reawakening his ancestral homeland to its coffee legacy and his perilous and spiritual journey to fulfill his dream.

Last Man Standing by Jack Olsen will be the focus of April – the gripping story of Geronimo Pratt, war hero and community leader, who was framed by the FBI in one of the greatest travesties of justice in American history.

In May, the discussion will trace the gradual philosophical development of a man who passes the first fifty years of his life in complete isolation on an uninhabited island in the 12th century philosophical romance Hayy ibn Yaqzan by Ibn Tufayl

Finally, in June, the Book Club will be based on the book Destiny Disrupted by Tamim Ansary – a book that leads the reader through nearly 1,500 years of Islamic history, from the revelation of the Qur’an and the early life of the Islamic community, through the Abbasids, the Ottomans, the Mughals, and up to the beginnings of the 21st century.

All books can be purchased in the Zaytuna College Bookstore, and it is recommended that attendees purchase and read the texts prior to Book Club events in order to come prepared for a lively discussion and enlightening experience.

All events will take place at Zaytuna College, 2401 Le Conte Ave. Berkeley, CA 94709. Doors for all events will open at 6:00 PM for a meet and greet and reception, followed by the program, which will begin at 7:00 PM. Experience the academic excellence of Zaytuna College first-hand, without needing to enroll. Do not miss out on the Zaytuna College Book Club.
