2019-04-13 13:00:00 2019-04-13 17:00:00 America/Los_Angeles Islamic Education: Between the Madrasah & Western Academy Education has been central to Islam since the first revelation given to Prophet Muḥammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him). Many avenues exist today for people, both Muslims and non-Muslims, to gain an understanding of this faith whose adherents constitute nearly 1/5 of the world’s population. Religious colleges (Madrasahs) continue to grow and cater to the needs of Muslims, but so are the number of Islamic studies and tenured professorships on university campuses. What substantive differences, if any, exist between the Madrasah and the Western academy in respect to the way Islam is studied? Does each institution nurture a different set of core competencies that the other does not? Do the means and goals of education differ and are one educational philosophy qualitatively better than another? How much intellectual innovation can proponents of classical Islamic methods and curricula tolerate? Which traditions of the Western academy are integral to its success and non-negotiable? 2019-04-19 18:30:00 2019-04-19 21:00:00 America/Los_Angeles The Crucifixion and the Qur'an: An Exegetical and Historical Inquiry into Surah 4:157-158 A lecture by Dr. Ali Ataie:Based upon Todd Lawson's book by the same name, this lecture will highlight and analyze the exegetical history of Muslim Theo/Christological thought with respect to the highly controversial al-Nisa 4:157 — the only ayah in the Qur'an that explicitly references the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him). What exactly is the ayah saying? Was Christ substituted? Did we swoon? Was he actually crucified? What are the (inter)textual and historical evidences for these positions?
