2018-04-23 17:30:00 2018-04-23 20:00:00 America/Los_Angeles Sacred Truths in a Profane World Americans live in a diverse society held together by respect for constitutional government and secular law. We have an idea of citizenship as something shared between faiths, but we don't necessarily have a precise theory that integrates faith with citizenship. This gives rise to a belief that all aspects of the sacred and the divine can be privatized and removed from the public square. Now, when we witness the degradation of our culture, we don't believe we have a right to interfere, which leads to the dangerous idea that the secular state is a spiritual desert and not a real home for people of faith. The British political philosopher Sir Roger Scruton believes religious communities must offer a vision of political order in which the sacred and the eternal are once again acknowledged as objects of our deepest desires. Join us for an enlightening address by Sir Roger, followed by an on-stage conversation with President Hamza Yusuf, about a renewed vision for the future of faith in American democracy. Reception begins 5:30 pm PST | Monday, April 23, 2018 Program and livestream begins 6:00 pm PST This is a free event hosted by Renovatio: The Journal of Zaytuna College Zaytuna College, Le Conte Avenue, Berkeley, CA, USA Zaytuna College
