Zaytuna College 2021 Commencement

Commencing a Life of Learning and Service

Watch Now

Despite a challenging academic year with the Covid-19 crisis that forced us online, we have continually received God's blessings, among which is the gift of celebrating two graduating classes, the master’s and the bachelor’s classes of 2021.

On Sunday, May 23, Zaytuna College hosted a live-streamed farewell to our bachelor’s and master’s graduates. These promising and persevering students have worked diligently throughout their time at Zaytuna College, particularly during this past year, in which they completed their coursework amid the disruption caused by the pandemic. Watch the Commencement video to get a glimpse of the thoughtful intellectual work these students are producing, ranging from topics on epistemology and political justice to Islamic education and bioethics.

The ceremony includes an address by a very special guest speaker, Dr. Eva Brann, a 2005 recipient of the National Humanities Medal who was Dean of St. John’s College in Annapolis and remains as its longest-serving tutor. Imam Zaid Shakir, President Hamza Yusuf, Provost Omar Qureshi, and Heba El-Haddad also offer remarks and reflections, as do student representatives from each of the graduating master’s and bachelor’s cohorts.

Commencement Speaker: Dr. Eva Brann

We believe that it will be a true gift for Zaytuna’s students, faculty, and you, our supporters, to hear Dr. Eva Brann’s address for our graduates. Having taught for over sixty years at St. John’s and published countless seminal books and articles on philosophy, education, and other topics, Dr. Brann has dedicated her life to helping preserve the best of Western tradition and civilization. While obsession with information marks our modern world, her steadfast service to the liberal arts refreshingly reminds us that seeking true knowledge and wisdom is a worthy and fulfilling endeavor—and a lifelong pursuit which our graduates will now commence.
