2017 Commencement

Class of 2017

On behalf of Zaytuna College, President Hamza Yusuf requests the honor of your presence at the College’s 2017 Commencement at 2:00 pm, Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 2401 Le Conte Ave., Berkeley, California. 

At this Commencement, you will witness Zaytuna’s fourth-ever graduating class receive their Bachelor of Arts diplomas in Islamic Law and Theology.

Dr. Mansa Bilal Mark King has a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in psychology from Howard University. Bilal is a certified speaker for the Islamic and Interfaith Speakers Bureaus of Atlanta, and will honor us as the Commencement Speaker.

There will be a reception immediately following the Commencement.

Mansa Bilal Mark King

Mansa Bilal Mark King has a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in psychology from Howard University. He is an associate professor of sociology at Morehouse College. It is the nation’s only Historically Black Liberal Arts College for men, counts Martin Luther King, Jr. (no relation) among its renowned alumni, and boasts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. In 2012, Bilal began collaborating on the After Malcolm Digital Collective with Abbas Barzegar and Zaynab Mansour Ansari, while his traditionally published research has focused on family structure and child well-being; racial and ethnic inequality, interfaith families in Ghana, and the racial reconciliation of blacks and whites in the U.S.. His next project will focus on the role of spiritual communities like the Muridiyya, Tijaniyya, African Hebrew Israelites, and Orisha/Ifa in Blackamerican transnationalism. Bilal is a certified speaker for the Islamic and Interfaith Speakers Bureaus of Atlanta, and was a "" manager for the Islamic Networks Group. He has also worked as a community organizer, an education research interviewer, a violence-prevention best-practices analyst, and an evaluation consultant. He lives in Atlanta with his wife, Fikira, and daughters, Sabila and Hafsatu.
