Salam alaykum wa rahmatullah.
I sincerely hope that these summer months prove healthful and beneficial to all of you.
These past several weeks, we have seriously considered the question of whether to reopen our college for on-site learning or remain online for this Fall 2021. With the declining COVID-19 infection rates and hospitalizations in California and across the United States, I’m pleased to announce that, after careful review and deliberation, we have decided to reopen the campus this Fall, God-willing.
Our decision to reopen the campus relied heavily on the excellent work done by the College’s COVID-19 task force. Chaired by Imam Dawood Yasin, the task force includes our provost, Dr. Omar Qureshi; Sumaira Akhtar; Ibrahim Naqeeb; and J. J. Botha, who all worked diligently to ensure our final decision was a sound and safe one. I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to ensure that the safety of our staff, students, and faculty remained the top priority in our final decision.
The task force met twice a week for several months to review official safety guidelines and policies. In addition, many members attended educational webinars and training sessions to stay apprised of the latest CDC guidelines and regional safety protocols. I personally reviewed their reopening recommendations and commend them for their thoroughness and practicality.
The Provost and Student Life offices plan to hold college-wide assemblies where important information related to reopening policies will be explained in detail. Though the on-site campus experience will not be the same as the pre-COVID one due to the social-distancing and other safety guidelines that must be in place for now, we’re grateful for the opportunity to resume the irreplaceable experience of in-person collaborative learning.
We look forward to seeing you all in August, God willing. May Allah keep you all safe and healthy, and may He continue to keep Zaytuna in the shade of His mercy and grace.
